Pangolins feed on insects, particularly termites and ants. Areas that hold high densities of termites and ant colonies are potential for wildlife managers to identify where to release the rescued pangolins.

Direct observation from surveys conducted by Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO) in Tanzania showed that local people break termite mounds to make bricks for building houses. Therefore, understanding how human activities affect pangolin food availability is critical for pangolin conservation.

Raising awareness and working together with local communities to develop alternatives is essential. We thank WWF-US EFN Russel E. Train Grant for supporting TRCO which managed to conduct pangolin surveys in western Tanzania (Kagera and Geita regions).
