Pangolins are unique mammal species whose body is largely covered by scales. Their scales bring mess to their populations as the Asian traditional medicine demand and local beliefs exacerbate the increasing illegal poaching of pangolins from the wild in the world which redirects and intensifies poaching and trafficking of African pangolins to Asia.

Three out of four African pangolin species exist in Tanzania, however, information about these species is poorly documented which hinders policymakers and wildlife managers from developing conservation plans for pangolins. Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO), an NGO, in collaboration with donors and conservation practitioners committed to saving pangolins in Tanzania. TRCO commemorates World Pangolin Day by appreciating the support received from various partners, supporters and donors such as WWF Education For Nature, USAID through USAID Tuhifadhi Maliasili Activity, and the Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP). TRCO believe in the following to save pangolins in Tanzania;

  1. Raising awareness in Tanzania on pangolin ecology and trade issues
  2. Changing negative attitudes such as traditional medicine and other uses of the pangolin body towards pangolin protection and coexistence
  3. Training local people and local conservation practitioners on handling, releasing, and monitoring pangolins rescued from illegal trafficking
  4. Encourage improvement of anti-poaching efforts against illegal trafficking of pangolins
  5. Encourage establishment, protection, and restoration of pangolin habitats such as protected area corridors.
